Betterline, WSPs find solutions for their skyrocketing power bills
Betterline Water Limited has for the past 6 years built a niche in the market and created a network with water service providers. Mr. Benedict Kimi Meta Chief Executive Officer of Betterline Water Limited The Vision and Leadership Betterline Water Limited has for the past five years built a niche in the market and created a network with water service providers. Mr. Benedict Kutu Meta makes a bold pledge on his LinkedIn page, noting that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development recognizes the central role that improved access to both water and energy play in advancing sustainable development. He states, "I will use my experience to be part of the team that will help achieve the 2030 agenda on sustainable development."

Mr. Meta is the Founder and CEO of Betterline Water Limited, a Nairobi-based company offering various water harvesting, treatment, and pumping solutions. Before founding the company, he served for 20 years at Davis and Shirtliff, accumulating a wealth of experience in the country's water sector and spotting gaps for intervention. In August 2019, his tenure as Branch Manager at the Westlands Branch in Nairobi ended when he founded Betterline Water Limited, driven by a desire to address critical gaps in the sector and create jobs for youth and professionals. Starting with just two to three employees, the vision has blossomed over five years. Betterline has opened a main office in Nairobi and ventured into Kitengela, Kitui, and Kisumu.

Products and Strategic Approaches Mr. Meta attributes the company's meteoric rise to strategic business approaches, including carefully chosen product lines and partnerships. Betterline has invested in seven segments that remain the hallmark of its operations:
- Borehole drilling
- Water treatment solutions
- Swimming pool construction and maintenance services
- Irrigation solutions
- Galvanized steel tank towers and structures
- Generators
- Solar power solutions
The products sold include water pumps, solar panels, inverters, and lithium batteries. Through a partnership with Grundfos Kenya, the company has built a solid reputation as a provider of commercial and domestic building services water solutions. As a distributor for building and irrigation pumps and solar equipment, the company works closely with Water Service Providers (WSPs), NGOs, plumbers, and individuals. Additionally, they are making deliberate efforts to support agriculture by teaming up with the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA).

Efficiency and Sustainability
Sustainability and efficiency are major drivers for the company. Mr. Meta asserts that 40% of the world's power is used for pumping and cooling, highlighting the need for cheaper alternatives like solar power. Efficiency is the company's "mantra," leading Mr. Meta to encourage WSPs to conduct power audits to adopt self-sustaining and profitable power sources. The company is currently teaming up with like-minded entities to install a 75-kilowatt solar power plant in Kakuma to drive pumps capable of pumping 300,000 litres of water a day. They also work with Strathmore University on research to spur technological development in the sector.
Betterline has drilled boreholes in Narok, Tana River, and Taita Taveta, among other regions. According to Mr. Meta, 80 per cent of these boreholes are fully solarized, supported by the distribution of subsidized inverters and lithium batteries to enable WSPs to power their stations.
CSR Activities Betterline Water Limited is at the forefront of championing access to clean water through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). These activities include donating boreholes to the community and giving free trees. In 2024, St. Mark primary and secondary schools benefited from these initiatives.
